I have known what I want to have, the devices I want to integrate with in my life for many years. The technology just has not been available. It has been emerging however and finally I believe that I can make a solid, reasonably priced, modern technology integration happen today.
Here is what the stack looks like. The device stack consists of an iPad, my Mac Pro and "some pocket sized, durable, non cellular device". In that stack is probably a watch, I am currently using an Android bluetooth watch.
This is like, duh! However, it's how we use these devices that makes this evolving stack interesting. The iPad is the key! I am using a Gen 4 iPad that is both Wifi and Cellular (Verizon LTE). It is an older, more solid unit. It seems more durable than the newer models. I require this device to be my main user interface. It is cellular so that it is on the network anywhere. Further it serves the network to my Mac as well as my handheld device. This is the immersion device. From here I can text, email, call, FaceTime, generally communicate at any level.
I don't picture using the small pocket device very much. I think the watch will be great for "You have a call, pick up your iPad". The pocket device should be durable for when I am out and about, mainly hiking or Jeeping. It generally rolls Google Voice and gets its network from the iPad. So in the jeep the iPad stays safe and on power, serving the network. So long as I'm within WiFi range of the Jeep, my pocket device can still text, receive phone calls and do everything it normally does. In fact, with Google Voice, the handheld device works like a cellular phone anywhere I am connected to WiFi.
I'm jumping! I will document it all as I go along. Wish me luck!
